1907<$20> High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 NGC. This is a remarkable Choice Mint State example of the lovely MCMVII (1907) High Relief double eagle, struck near the end of the year. The surfaces are fully brilliant with light yellow-gold coloration. Pre-eminent artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who worked in a studio in Cornish, New Hampshire, near the Connecticut River and the Vermont border, was selected by his friend President Roosevelt to create new designs for the eagle and double eagle issues. For the eagle, he chose an Indian Head design, while his choice for the double eagle was this splendid motif featuring lady Liberty.
The present sale provides a remarkable opportunity to examine several different High Relief coins, including three high-grade Mint State coins and two high-grade examples certified as proofs. The two proof coins have identical die polishing lines in the fields, meaning they were struck from the same die. This Choice Mint State example also has visible die polishing lines in the fields, but in different locations, clearly proving that it came from a different physical coinage die. Perhaps it is not the mere presence of die polishing lines that determines whether an example is a proof or a business strike, but the presence of a specific pattern of polishing lines.
