1907<$20> High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 NGC. The production of the Saint-Gaudens' designed double eagles was termed President Roosevelt's "pet baby" in correspondence between himself and the artist. Production of this coin is also an example of how one man's will can move mountains. Roosevelt was single-minded in the matter of the production of this coin. He thought Charles Barber's circulating coinage was of "atrocious hideousness." Strong stuff for those who collect these coins today, but Roosevelt was comparing these pieces to the coinage of ancient Greece and Macedon. He had to put up with numerous delays from Saint-Gaudens, who had other commissions and was suffering from stomach cancer, on the one hand, and Charles Barber, who resented any outside interference in Mint matters, on the other hand. This is a particularly attractive coin that has bright, exceptionally vibrant, lustrous surfaces. There is a noticeable accent of reddish patina on each side, and only the tiniest contact marks are present (visible only with a loupe).
From the Dr. Kurt Peters Collection. From the Dr. Kurt Peters Collection.
