1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 NGC. In his succinct style, art critic Cornelius Vermeule, writing in his Numismatic Art in America (1971), says of the Saint-Gaudens design, "The double-Eagle is perhaps the most majestic coin ever to bear our national imprint. The Liberty striding forward is as grand in miniature as the Hellenistic Victory of Samothrace on a heroic scale." The marble statue of the winged goddess Victory (or Nike) stands in the Louvre in Paris. It was sculpted at the height of the Hellenistic period, perhaps as early as 288 B.C., to around 190 B.C., to commemorate a naval victory of Rhodes. The statue, nearly 11 feet tall, is considered one of the great surviving masterpieces of Hellenistic sculpture, although the figure is significantly damaged, missing its head and outstretched arms. Even though sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens died in August 1907 and President Roosevelt died in 1919, one likes to think they would take great pride at so noted a critic's assessment of their accomplishments.
The present example shows a trace of a wire rim around portions of each side. The well-struck, lustrous surfaces show no singular distractions and offer pleasing antique-gold color, deepening to tinges of lilac near the obverse rim.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
