1907<$20> High Relief, Wire Rim MS63 PCGS. Two versions of the MCMVII High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles are known to collectors, with either a Wire Rim (as offered here) or a Flat Rim. At least half of the circumference of the coin, on one or both sides, has a thin raised lip of metal, created by the junction of the dies and the collar, which was not a perfect fit. The extreme pressure and multiple blows used to create these coins forced the metal into the void at this junction of steel parts, creating this raised rim. This was considered undesirable at the time these coins were created late in 1907, and was later modified to provide a smoother edge. This example is well struck with satiny yellow-gold luster and excellent eye appeal. Only a couple tiny abrasions are seen on the obverse that serve to limit the grade.
