1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS63 PCGS. From our New York 2002 Bullet Auction, lot 1750, where it was described as: "While the High Relief issue with the Roman date MCMVII is not prohibitively rare, it is enormously popular due to its historical importance and the medal-like relief of the devices. Struck only upon the insistence of President Theodore Roosevelt, over the objections of Chief Engraver Charles Barber. Roosevelt is quoted by Breen to have said, "Begin the new issue even if it takes you all day to strike one piece!" While the obverse of this example has a flat rim, the reverse shows a wire rim across most of the circumference. The major devices have exquisite detail that the subsequent normal relief issues could not hope to approach. There is, however, slight weakness on the Capitol building and the lower rays of the sun, as is usually encountered. The right obverse field has a pair of small abrasions that preclude an even higher grade." Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
