1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS63 NGC. Two versions of the MCMVII High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles are known to collectors, with either a Wire Rim (as offered here) or a Flat Rim (also offered in this sale). At least half of the circumference of the coin, on one or both sides, has a thin raised lip of metal, created by the junction of the dies and the collar, which was not a perfect fit. The extreme multiple blow pressure used to create these coins forced the metal into the void at this junction of steel parts, creating this raised rim. This was certainly not desirable at the time these coins were created late in 1907, and it is entirely possible that mint workman carefully removed this rim with the use of a metal file, prior to the coins being released. This example is sharply struck with satiny yellow-gold luster and excellent eye appeal. Only a couple tiny rim bruises are visible with otherwise excellent surfaces.
From The Luke Fay Collection.
