1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS62 PCGS. The allure of a rare coin is not just its technical state of preservation, and the degree of its closeness to perfection. Eye appeal is important to almost every collector, but many forget or do not realize the place and time from which a coin came. The always popular High Relief--of whatever variety, or whatever might be the state of its preservation--was born of genius 100 years ago this year. All collectors today are familiar to some extent with its story. But what of the year 1907? The man who engraved this coin died in the same year it was introduced. His double eagle was a dramatic break from the past, ground breaking in 1907. Other daring artists were at work: Henry Rousseau, Edvard Munch, Marc Chagall, and Pablo Picasso. Art Nouveau was sweeping the decorative art world; the Impressionist movement of the 1880s was beginning to be appreciated as it had not been in the heyday of its creative momentum; and experiments in the art of money were breaking ground--the brilliant proofs of the 19th century, for example, were just giving way to the experimental matte proofing technique, both in America and in Europe. A century ago, the world was looking both backward and forward. Artists found inspiration in the past, as did Saint-Gaudens from ancient coins. Technology was looking forward, and making history at the same time, for never in the remembered past had a coin of such luxurious appearance as this piece been created--not since the ancient artists of some 2,000 years past.
This MS62 High Relief has significant visual appeal. The surfaces are a bit bright, as might be expected from the grade, and are covered with even reddish patina. A few small, individually insignificant contact marks can be seen with magnification but are virtually imperceptible to the unaided eye.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
