1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS62 NGC
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS62 NGC. The wire rim (sometimes described as a "knife edge" or "fin") that appears on a number of 1907 High Relief double eagles is an artifact of the minting process. On striking, a small amount of gold from the planchet would force its way between the side of the anvil or hammer die and the collar, resulting in a small but distinct protrusion from the rim at the outermost edge. While present-day numismatists do not consider this wire rim a flaw, Mint technicians of the time did, and they sought to eliminate the wire rim from later strikes.
This attractive Wire Rim piece has the exceptional detail that collectors have come to expect from the High Relief design. The lustrous yellow-orange surfaces display slight haze on the reverse, but this haze is in no way distracting, and the wispy abrasions that account for the grade are scattered and few. While the holder makes the wire rim difficult to view, the upper left obverse shows this feature best.

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
