1907 $20 High Relief PR64 NGC. Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber reported that only five proof variants of the MCMVII High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle were originally produced. Breen, however, accounts for seven examples in his 1988 Encyclopedia that can be pedigreed to Barber, and he states that "others cannot be traced to him." We do not know exactly how many proof High Relief Double Eagles were originally produced, but they all display, in addition to a satin finish, the following diagnostics: 1. Sharp inner border on both sides. 2. All berries in the obverse olive branch are well rounded. 3. The Capitol building on the obverse is fully brought up with distinct pillars. 4. The eagle's tail feathers are distinct all the way up to the right reverse border. 5. The edge letters are bolder than those seen on business strikes, and there are horizontal striations between them. 6. No more than a trace of a wire rim is evident on either side. Those features that we can examine on the present NGC-encapsulated specimen match those listed here, which we have taken from Breen (1988). What's more, the overall striking definition is appreciably sharper than that seen on the already carefully produced business strikes. Green-gold in color at indirect angles, the surfaces brighten to orange-gold shades as the coin rotates into the light. Both sides are expectantly blemish-free for the assigned grade with only a few tiny grazes and alloy spots toward the borders that seem to preclude a full Gem designation. One of numerous proof High Relief Twenties that this cataloger has handled since our November 2000 Santa Clara Signature Sale, and one of the most visually appealing at the PR64 level. From the George Coyman Collection.
