1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS66 NGC. This remarkab
1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS66 NGC. This remarkably sharp example has many characteristics that are seen on examples certified as proof, although the details at the lower left part of the obverse lack just enough sharpness to qualify as a proof. This piece is fully brilliant with rich yellow-gold color and satiny luster. The surfaces are remarkable for their preservation, and the overall aesthetic appeal of this Premium Gem is second to none. As wonderful as this coin is, the accompanying paperwork tells of an interesting history. Two items are included with this coin, both pointing to an important provenance.
The first item is a somewhat tattered envelope imprinted "A. Raymond Raff, Builder, Philadelphia." A handwritten note, dated December 4, 1914, is on the outside of the envelope that obviously contained this coin for many years:

To John, From Dady, Moral. Do not spend this coin. Keep it safely stored away. Today, it is worth $45.00. 20 years from today it will be worth $448.00. 30 years--$1,000.00. A good investment to hold inasmuch as it costs you nothing in the original investment."

Although the projected valuations were not entirely accurate, the note provides a fascinating glimpse into the numismatic scene during the early 20th century. Some twenty years after this note was written, the very same A. Raymond Raff was Superintendent of the Philadelphia Mint, as mentioned in a typed letter dated March 8, 1960, from then current Philadelphia Mint Superintendent (Mrs.) Rae V. Biester, addressed to Mr. James T. MacAllister:

"In reply to your verbal inquiry, be advised Mr. A. Raymond Raff was appointed March 1, 1934--Superintendent of the Mint of the United States at Philadelphia, and resigned April 7, 1935."

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
