1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS65 PCGS. Multiple strikes at extreme pressure were required to bring up all of the detail on these intricately designed gold pieces. Even under such unusual production circumstances, this piece is not fully defined. Slight weakness is evident among the pillars of the structures at the lower left obverse, and the swirling die polish lines are not bold on this example. The surfaces are amazing with brilliant yellow-gold color and full satin luster on both sides. This piece is essentially pristine and void of any surface marks aside from a few miniscule field ticks on each side. Although this Gem is described as the Flat Rim variety, minute traces of a raised outer rim can be seen. This is perfectly normal for these pieces.
The High Relief double eagles closely represent the design that was intended by Augustus Saint-Gaudens before Charles Barber made his modifications. The modifications that Barber eventually made to the design was intended to facilitate production as the High Relief creation was clearly not conducive to high production levels that were contemplated or expected. Although created under the guise of a production necessity, it is clear the Barber did not like the Saint-Gaudens design, and he probably didn't even like his famous contemporary. There is no doubt that Barber was jealous of Saint-Gaudens' abilities as an artist and sculptor, and upset by the appointment of Saint-Gaudens to redesign the coinage.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
