1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS65 PCGS. After production was halted for adjustments to fix the problem of "fins" on these High Relief pieces, the Flat Rim coins were produced. It is believed that approximately one-third of all High Relief double eagles are the Flat Rim variety, as explained in The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, by James L. Halperin, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Greg Rohan: "After examining hundreds of High Relief twenties, we have observed that Wire Rim pieces don't necessarily have a complete wire rim, and conversely, Flat Rim pieces might show traces of a localized wire rim. It is generally accepted that about 33 percent (the final 4,000 pieces or so) of the High Reliefs minted were of the Flat Rim variety; however, their survival ratio is much lower with probably no more than 20 to 25% of the Flat Rims known today. Another possibility for the lower survival rate of Flat Rim twenties is perhaps the conventional wisdom's estimate is a bit off. It might possibly be that the Flat Rim High Reliefs were simply released later and thus they were less of a novelty."
This example does exhibit traces of a wire rim, particularly on the reverse. The surfaces on both sides are exceptional with satiny yellow-gold brilliance and exceptional strength of strike throughout. A splash of deeper gold color appears along the lower right reverse border of this specimen.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
