1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS63 PCGS. The Wire Rim Saint-Gaudens double eagles were regarded during the era of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Charles Barber, Frank Leach, and President Theodore Roosevelt as an undesirable aberration from an aesthetic standpoint, and a potential liability from a legal standpoint, due to their proclivity to abrade below the standard weight tolerances. Today both the Flat Rim and Wire Rim variants are considered attractive, although the Flat Rim is, by far, the scarcer of the two issues. Interestingly, the average grades for the two issues, as Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth compiled for their gold Encyclopedia, confirm the greater circulation of the initial Wire Rim variant. The Wire Rim shows an average grade of 62.2, while the Flat Rim averages 63.8--more than 1.5 points finer. This is a particularly attractive coin that has rich, satiny surfaces and a slight overlay of reddish patina. Sharply defined throughout.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
