1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim MS62 NGC. The striking 1907
1907<$20> High Relief, Flat Rim MS62 NGC. The striking of the 1907 High Relief issues, even though lowered from the previous Ultra High Relief issues, was still problematic. Many tended to have rims that, through the repeated blows necessary to achieve a satisfactory strike, tended to produce a "fin" or wire rim, a thin extrudation of gold that extended upward into the collar. The Flat Rim pieces were produced by adjustment to a different combination of milling and planchet diameter, rather than from a separate die. The separate listings in the Guide Book have spurred demand for the Wire Rim and Flat Rim issues, the latter being about twice as scarce as the former. This piece shows its distinctive Flat Rim clearly through the NGC holder, and offers lustrous antique-gold surfaces. There is little evidence of post-striking contact save for a couple of ticks on Liberty's left (facing) leg at mid-thigh, and a trivial scrape near the bottom of the pole. This piece is a beautiful and well produced example of this issue, widely considered among the most desirable in U.S. numismatics.
