1907 $10 Wire Rim MS66 PCGS. In the opinio...
1907 $10 Wire Rim MS66 PCGS. In the opinion of this cataloger (and a great many other numismatists, we suspect), the Indian Eagle is one of the most beautiful coins ever produced by the U.S. Mint. The work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this design made its debut in 1907. The original coins produced (500 examples, according to a letter that Henry Chapman wrote to John Garrett in 1908) are the only coins of this type that display Saint-Gaudens' design in its original form. The name of this issue stems from the delicate, knife-like rim that both sides display. This feature is the result of metal being forced between the collar and the dies during striking; the coins were not originally designed with a rim. The wire rim on both sides had the potential to interfere with the ejection process, and it also caused stacking problems. What's more, the lack of a traditional rim made the surfaces very susceptible to abrasions. These considerations explain why the Mint did not adopt Saint-Gaudens' original design for circulation. This is a simply extraordinary 1907 Wire Rim Eagle whose surfaces are overlaid in rich satin luster. Random striations from die polishing are seen in the fields, particularly on the reverse, and these features attest to the fact that great care was taken in the production of these coins. The color is a warm, orange-gold hue, the surfaces are free of bothersome alloy spots and handling marks. This fully struck example would form the centerpiece of any advanced collection of 20th century gold. Population: 5 in 66, only one is finer (11/01).
