1907 $10 Wire Rim MS66 NGC.<p>Debate still rages over whether or not these coins were produced as proofs or business strikes. Either way, they were not intended for general circulation, but rather to demonstrate the design and striking characteristics of the new Indian Eagle. The present coin is satiny in finish with an original, pale, orange-gold sheen. The surfaces are partially veiled in hazy overtones, but the diagnostic striations (as struck) in the reverse field are readily evident. There is a lone abrasion in the left obverse field, but otherwise both sides are distraction-free. In the opinion of this cataloger (and a great many other numismatists, we suspect), the Indian Eagle is one of the most beautiful coins ever produced by the U.S. Mint. The work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this design made its debut in 1907. The original coins produced (500 examples, according to a letter that Henry Chapman wrote to John Garrett in 1908) are the only coins of this type that display Saint-Gaudens's design in its original form. The name of this issue stems from the delicate, knife-like rim that both sides display. This feature is the result of metal being forced between the collar and the dies during striking; the coins were not originally designed with a rim. The wire rim on both sides had the potential to interfere with the ejection process, and it also caused stacking problems. What's more, the lack of a traditional rim made the surfaces very susceptible to abrasions. These considerations explain why the Mint did not adopt Saint-Gaudens's original design for circulation. From the Peter Crist Collection.
