1907 $10 Wire Rim MS66 NGC. The first issue of the Indian eagles, like the similar High Relief double eagles, truly showed the artistic genius of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The design appears exactly as he intended. Later issues of both denominations were produced from a design that was modified by Charles Barber under the guise of better production capabilities and easier handling. The initial pieces had a markedly concave field curving up from the center to the rim. Although beautiful, these coins were not easily handled. For example, placing the coins in stacks while counting them was extremely difficult. Because of this, these Wire Rim pieces were not actually distributed to banks and were never placed in circulation.
The actual distribution of the Wire Rim eagles was just 472 pieces, that were made available to members of President Roosevelt's cabinet, members of Congress, officials of the Treasury and Justice departments, and others who placed a request for examples, including private citizens and museums. Essentially, anyone could obtain an example by paying face value for the coins.
This Premium Gem is a magnificent example of the Wire Rim variety with a thin raised lip around the entire obverse and reverse border. The surfaces are satiny and highly lustrous with brilliant yellow-gold color. Numerous die polishing lines are present, mostly on the reverse, imparting a faintly reflective appearance. There are no blemishes or copper spots evident on either side. Census: 17 in 66, 8 finer (2/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
