1907 $10 Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. The Wire Rim tens are the equivalent to the Ultra High Reliefs, in that each represents Augustus Saint-Gaudens' concept of how circulating coinage should appear in the United States. Much has been written about the antagonism between Saint-Gaudens and Chief Engraver Charles Barber. Much of what has been written about the animosity between these two is true, but the fact is Charles Barber was correct in certain regards. Nevertheless, that does not keep writers from demonizing him in the story of the development of the ten and twenty dollar coins--after all, every good story needs an antagonist. What Barber knew from decades of experience was that coins like the Ultra High Relief, the regular High Relief, and the Wire Rim tens could not be struck for use in the channels of commerce. In the case of the twenties, they required too many blows from a medal (hydraulic) press. In the case of the tens, Charles Barber's lack of skill with the new Janvier Reducing Lathe gave the coins soft, mushy design elements. The next attempt at commercial production was even less successful when Barber reduced the ten dollar design and the result was the Rolled Rim coins.
The Wire Rim tens were never really circulated as Saint-Gaudens intended. They were largely sold to collectors, museums, and administration officials as mementoes. As a result, most examples survive today in high grade. This is a particularly attractive coin that shows the usual bright yellow-gold surfaces with a hint of reddish patina around the margins. The slightly granular surfaces are essentially free of contact marks, the only interruption in the flow of the mint luster coming from the die polishing marks in the field that are seen on all Wire Rim tens.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
