1907 $10 Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. Approximately 500 Wire Edge tens were struck by the Philadelphia Mint to provide a test run for Augustus Saint-Gaudens' original Indian Head eagle design. As none of these coins were intended for circulation, this issue is technically a pattern and at least half of the original mintage of this issue survives for the benefit of today's collectors. Like the 1856 Flying Eagle cent and 1836 Gobrecht dollar, issues struck under similar circumstances, the Judd reference number (here Judd-1774) has been dropped in most popular references. Never actually released into circulation, lower grade or damaged survivors of this elusive variety are more the result of collector mishandling or abuse.
This is a satiny greenish-gold Gem with a delicate reddish tinge about the devices. Normal die polish or finishing lines are especially prominent on the reverse. We notice a shallow luster grazes on the neck and a few others of less severity are found in the headdress. Trivial marks also affect the lower half of the reverse. It sounds odd to make such a statement, but this high quality representative is one of several Gem or better Wire Rim eagles in tonight's Platinum session. Population: 39 in 65, 16 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
