1907[$10] Wire Rim MS64 PCGS.
1907<$10> Wire Rim MS64 PCGS. The Wire Edge and Rolled Edge eagles issued in 1907 are both listed in the standard reference works on pattern coinage. Numismatist Roger W. Burdette, in a article appearing in the May 31, 2004 issue of Coin World discounted the status of these coins as patterns: "Strictly speaking, neither variety [Wire Edge or Rolled Edge] is a pattern, and they might be more accurately described as special issues and withdrawn production pieces, respectively." According to most scholars today, the accepted mintage of these Wire Edge eagles was just 500 examples, with this information based on an account penned by Henry Chapman in 1908, in a letter written to Robert Garrett. The text of this letter was reprinted in The History of United States Coinage As Illustrated by the Garrett Collection by Q. David Bowers and provides fascinating information.
"I wish to give you some information. If you will act quickly upon it I think we will secure for you a couple of coins which are worth large sums. The director of the mint, Mr. Frank A. Leach, at Washington, has in his possession, and is distributing at face value, to collectors or public museums, to the latter he writes me more especially than to the former, special $10 gold pieces of the Saint-Gaudens design, 1907.
"If you will write him and ask him to send you a specimen of the $10 gold piece, Saint-Gaudens design 1907, from die No. 1 without any border, and die No. 2, with a wire or thin edge, you might say to him that you have been informed that he has a few of these for distribution to collections which are exhibited to the public. I would tell him that your collection is on exhibition at Princeton College and that you would like to have him send you them. Send him $20 in gold notes and 12c in postage stamps, and I think you will succeed. Do not mention my name or your source of information.
"Of the coin without the border, 500 were made, of number 2 only 50 were kept out of several thousand that were minted. The rest were melted.
"As he has but a few of the wire edge, which he refuses to let me have a specimen of, I would suggest that you write immediately upon receipt of this. If you can bring to bear any influence of your senator or congressman, it might be well to do so, but I think that it is possible you will get them without bringing anyone else into the matter, which might cause delay. If you succeed in getting them, you are going to get two coins worth $400.
"No Proof sets of 1908 gold are yet issued, and now when they are it is likely the die without In God We Trust will not be used, but a new die with the motto. I have those without the motto laid aside if you want them."
Satiny surfaces are the result of numerous minute die polishing lines in the fields and on the devices on both obverse and reverse. These surfaces exhibit a few trivial imperfections; however, they are hardly worth mentioning within the context of the grade assigned to this specimen. The Wire Edge and Rolled Edge Indian eagles, along with the High Relief double eagles, represent the original work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as he intended these coins to look, and are among the most beautiful of all United States coin designs.
From The John Michael Stuart Collection, Part Two.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
