1907<$10> Wire Rim MS63 PCGS. The Wire Rim ten was the first attempt by the Mint to translate Augustus Saint-Gaudens' design into coin form. The name is derived from the delicate, knife-like rim that surrounds each side. This feature is the result of metal that was forced between the collar and the dies during striking--it is not a design feature. This wire rim had the potential to interfere with the ejection process, and it also caused stacking problems. The lack of a traditional rim also made the surfaces more susceptible to abrasions. As a result, Charles Barber modified the Wire Rim design to the second of three designs of the year, the Rolled Edge.
The indistinct striking definition on Wire Rim tens is a direct result of Charles Barber's unfamiliarity with the use of the Janvier Reducing Lathe. The surfaces of these pieces also show myriad die polishing marks, and as a result the coins are always bright with vibrant mint luster. This piece has pronounced yellow-gold surfaces that show a few small contact marks when closely examined.
