1907 $10 No Periods MS65 PCGS. This is the third and final Indian Head eagle dated 1907. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933, say: "Mint Engraver Charles Barber tinkered with the Saint-Gaudens design and finally came up with this issue. The triangular stops or periods were removed and the branch has a different shape. The ends of the feathers were strengthened, but the central hair and feathers are weaker." Gold specialist Roger Burdette elaborates further: "This last version of the 1907 gold eagle is the one used for production of coins that actually made it into circulation. Dies were prepared from a new set of models provided by the Saint-Gaudens' Estate and approved by Philadelphia Mint engraver Barber. Overall, the design resulted in sharper looking coins."
There is no denying Burdette's last comment, for the Gem specimen in this lot jumps out at the viewer. The luster is vibrant, and the strike is exquisite. Moreover, both sides display rich peach-gold and apricot coloration that is joined on the reverse with tinges of mint-green. Immaculate surfaces reveal just a few minute marks on Liberty's cheek and the eagle, precluding an even higher grade.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
