1906-S 50C MS64 PCGS. This issue's original minta
1906-S 50C MS64 PCGS. This issue's original mintage of 1.7 million pieces, while not one of the lowest mintages in the Barber half series, is a very challenging issue from a condition standpoint. At the near-Gem level, the reports of PCGS and NGC combined, as of February, show only 44 pieces certified, with just 29 specimens grading higher. This example exhibits bold definition, with just a touch of weakness apparent in the upper right (facing) portion of the shield. Each side is awash in radiant luster, with wisps of golden-brown patina imbued with ice-blue accents on the obverse, and golden-brown and pale violet in the reverse center framed by peripheral cobalt-blue. A few minute marks on Liberty's cheek are all that keeps this marvelous Barber from achieving full-Gem status. Aficionados of Barber halves are sure to offer liberal bids on this coin. Population: 28 in 64, 15 finer (2/05).
