1906 John L. Sullivan Signed Letter. Exceptiona
1906 John L. Sullivan Signed Letter. Exceptional TLS from the last bare-knuckle Heavyweight Champion offers the finest content imaginable, touching upon the two most desirable topics related to this storied pugilist: boxing and temperance. Sullivan answers a request to participate in a boxing exhibition, suggesting he could convince the adversaries in his two bloodiest bouts to sign on. "I can arrange with Jake Kilrain, and Charley Mitchell, for an exhibition with myself about February First, and I am willing to Box each of them Four friendly rounds." Later he addresses his newfound teetotaling ways, stating, "I was 48 years old on Oct. 15, 1906, and although I have not touched a drop of liquor for 22 months I cannot always last." This single typed page, on Detroit, Michigan hotel stationery, is signed at the close in 9/10 black fountain pen ink. Original mailing folds and a small chip lost from lower right must be noted, but neither of these issues causes any concern. The letter is tastefully matted and framed with a fine Currier & Ives portrait of the Champ dating to 1883, measuring 12x17". Final dimensions are 22x25". LOA from PSA/DNA.
