1906<$5> PR66 PCGS. This is a splendid Premium Gem proof that is housed in an older green-label PCGS holder. It has rich orange-gold color that is deeper on the reverse. All design details are fully defined as they should be on this proof representative. The surfaces are pristine with no visible blemishes, even with the closest examination.
In 1906, the Philadelphia Mint produced a mere 85 examples of this denomination in proof format. Although the majority of those coins still survive today, few can equal this piece for its exceptional quality and aesthetic appeal. PCGS, for example, has never certified a finer numerical example of this date. Since 1993, we have only handled a dozen proof 1906 half eagles in all of our auctions, and none as fine as this. The population data is not entirely accurate, as many coins have been resubmitted, on multiple occasions in some instances. PCGS and NGC have combined to certified a total of 102 proof examples of this date, more than the total mintage! With continual resubmissions of coins for higher grades, such a scenario will be repeated for many issues.
The 1906 and 1907 half eagles are the last pieces in the Liberty Head series with examples struck in proof quality, and both years saw a total proof mintage of less than 100 coins. Although 1908 Liberty Head half eagles were coined for a brief period, no proofs were minted. Population: 4 in 66, 0 finer (9/06).
From The Hamburg-Sonoma Collection.
