1906 $5 PR53 PCGS. Probably because of a lack of new designs, proof mintages of all denominations declined during the first decade of the 20th century. 230 proof half eagles were struck in 1900, but by 1906, only 85 proofs were struck. Despite their obvious rarity, proof gold coins carried little numismatic premium over face until the 1940s. Heirs, collectors, and even dealers often spent the pieces. This example circulated briefly, then was likely hoarded with peer gold pieces until a numismatist surmised its true nature decades later. Glimpses of radiant mirror surface remain, although the open fields display expected rub. Housed in a green label holder.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
