<B>1906 $20 PR65 NGC.</B></I> Although a prized rarity in Gem condition and seldom offered in any grade, the 1906 is among the more frequently encountered proof Liberty double eagles. Nevertheless, the number of survivors is still limited in an absolute sense, being on the order of only 50-60 coins from an official mintage of 94 proofs. Moderate attrition on these high denomination proof gold coins is understandable since their numismatic value did not substantially exceed their face value for several decades. A certain amount of date pressure also falls on the 1906 double eagle, while perhaps less than in days gone by, because of the issue's low business strike mintage and scarcity in better Mint State grades.<BR> This lovely specimen displays unfathomably deep, glassy mirrors and at least a modest amount of contrast between the fields and devices, especially considering the era in which is was produced. The bright yellow-gold surfaces are faintly striated and show a hint of striking deficiency in the centers, both characteristics found on every proof double eagle seen by this cataloger. A small coppery alloy spot is tucked away on the obverse border adjacent to star 9. While not at all distracting, this feature is particularly useful for future attribution. An exciting, high quality proof twenty for the quality conscious gold collector or investor.
