<B>1906 $20 PR64 Cameo PCGS.</B></I> In every instance, proof gold coins can be classified as rare, or even extremely rare. Even the most plentiful of all proof gold coins are rare when compared to such things as proof Morgan dollars, trade dollars, or even Seated dollars. In the particular case of this proof 1906 double eagle, it has an added bonus of cameo contrast. Cameo and Deep Cameo proof gold coins comprise a substantial portion of surviving specimens from the 19th century, but about 1901, the Mint decided that such an appearance was <I>undesirable</B></I>. <BR> As a result, new processes were developed that allowed polishing of the incused devices in the die, rather than just the fields. It is this die polishing that assists in creating the mirrored appearance in the fields of proof coins. Once the new method was developed, the fields and devices took on the mirrored proof appearance and cameo contrast was virtually eliminated. While cameo proofs still exist for the last seven years of the Liberty, PCGS has never certified a Deep Cameo proof double eagle from these years.<BR> This specimen is a lovely Choice Cameo proof with rich greenish yellow-gold color with deeply mirrored fields and satiny yellow luster on the obverse and reverse devices, including the date, stars, and lettering. A few faint hairlines and tiny contact marks can be seen on each side, mostly in the fields, and keep this specimen out of the Gem proof category.
