1906 $20 PR64 Cameo PCGS. In addition to the rarity of proof coins from a mintage of just 94 pieces, this is an important low-mintage date in business strike format as well. It is a key-date among later date Liberty double eagles. In all proof grades, possibly as many as 50 or 60 of these coins survive, although few have cameo contrast like this coin. Among all proof 1906 double eagles certified by NGC or PCGS, only one-third of the total have received the Cameo designation, and none have been certified as Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo by these two grading companies. The total existing population is somewhat smaller than the original mintage, despite the production of these coins strictly for collectors of the time. For many years, in fact well into the 1930s, the numismatic value of the larger denomination proof gold coins was only a slight premium over face value. Some prosperous collectors acquired these coins at the time of issue, then found their circumstances changed a couple decades later. They were forced to spend these coins for face value, thus explaining the existence of impaired specimens, if the pieces survived at all. Today, most of the known survivors from the 94 coin mintage are in lower numerical grades than this piece.
This near-Gem Cameo proof is remarkably appealing with deeply mirrored fields around the devices on both sides. The surfaces have attractive light yellow-gold color, and the design elements are boldly detailed. During the first several years of the 20th century, the Mint's coining department discouraged production of coins with any amount of cameo contrast, preferring the fully brilliant proof appearance with both the fields and devices exhibiting reflective mirrors. Population: 4 in 64 Cameo, 1 finer (12/06).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
