<B>1906 $20 PR64 Cameo NGC.</B></I> In the early 20th century, the Mint discouraged the production of contrasting cameo proof coins, especially after 1901, and examples are rarely encountered today. For example, less than half of the proof 1906 double eagles certified by NGC carry the Cameo designation, and not a single coin has been certified as an Ultra Cameo proof.<BR> Just 94 proof examples of this date were coined in the first place, and barely half of them survive today. Few Gem quality pieces exist, with PR64 examples such as this coin representing the usually seen grade. This piece is rather sharply struck, although some slight weakness is evident at the center of the reverse. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth note that many proofs of this issue have a softly defined reverse, but they didn't provide any further explanation. Perhaps the reverse die was minutely dished.<BR> A delightful piece, this example has fully mirrored fields with only a few faint hairlines to limit the grade. The devices have just enough satiny luster to qualify for the Cameo designation. Both sides have brilliant light yellow color with a hint of orange toning that adds to the aesthetic appeal. Only nine finer examples of this date have been certified by NGC (4/07), including Cameo and non-Cameo pieces. A highly desirable piece, due in part to the rarity of associated business strikes.
