1906 $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1906 twenty dollar gold piece
1906 $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1906 twenty dollar gold piece is clearly an undervalued coin. Despite a relatively small mintage of 69,596 coins, circulated examples of the 1906 double eagle are often valued on par with other dates within the series that were issued by the millions. The value discrepancy changes quickly above the MS63 level as few examples exist, and most of those that are available have only come into the marketplace with the past few decades, thanks to the repatriation of some European holdings. PCGS has graded 19 coins in MS64, with only seven finer, including a lone MS66 example (4/07). The NGC Census Report records even lower results. To further exemplify the true rarity of the 1906 double eagle in near-Gem or better condition, consider that the finest example in any PCGS Set Registry, including the top five of the All-Time Finest, is an MS64. That particular coin is the Harry W. Bass, Jr. coin. Even the Smithsonian collection lacks an example of this date. As more collectors compete to build high grade sets, the value of the 1906 twenties will surely increase dramatically, as the demand for this date will far outweigh the supply.
