<B>1906 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS.</B></I> A combined total of 264 examples of the 1906 proof quarter eagle have been certified by NGC and PCGS. This fact provides a fascinating insight into the nature of third party certification, since only 160 coins were actually issued. We must also accept as fact that only a portion of the original mintage of 1906 proof quarter eagles survived, with some estimates as low as half of the total mintage surviving.<BR> Population figures are often skewed on scarce issues where the next higher grade provides the owner with an opportunity for a substantial financial reward. In the case of the current coin, PCGS has certified 39 examples at the PR66 level, including those designated as Cameo, with only 5 higher (7/07). How many times was a single 1906 proof quarter eagle submitted in pursuit of a PR67 grade? We may never know, but a study of past major auctions reveals that this issue is scarcer than the population figures would indicate, especially in Premium Gem condition.<BR> This is a beautiful proof type coin. The fields are deeply reflective and each side shows deep reddish patina with occasional dabs of lilac on the lower obverse.
