1905-S 50C MS67 PCGS. This stunning Superb Gem is one 1905-S 50C MS67 PCGS. This stunning Superb Gem is one of the two very finest graded by both NGC and PCGS, neither of which service has seen any finer of this date and mint. Furthermore, this is the Eliasberg coin, which was purchased directly from the Mint and carefully preserved since that time. The fields are bright and reflective, with champagne-gold toning around the periphery of the obverse and reverse, with a blush of aqua blue through the denomination . A simply glorious example of this date. David Lawrence in his Complete Guide noted that this date is "very tough in grades of AU55 through Mint State" and continuing "A sleeper in Mint State and underrated." On the obverse we note the usual light planchet striae which are seen on the vast majority of San Francisco half dollars of this period, caused by planchet strip preparation process.
This particular coin is much finer than the James Bennet Pryor coin, which graded MS64, the best he could locate in two decades of extensive searching. Perhaps equal to the Dr. Thaine B. Price coin (David Akers 5/98, lot 164), although that specimen was not certified in that sale, it may be the other Superb Gem MS67 reported in the PCGS Population Report. Advanced collectors know to ignore the mintage in this case (2,494,000 pieces), and go by the Census and Population Report to get a true idea of what is out there in various grades. It is unlikely that more than a few Gem Mint State coins remain tucked away in collections, if any at all, which have not yet been certified.
In the Eliasberg Sale this specimen was noted to "Possibly the Finest Known" which may well be true, although the other MS67 specimen is not available for comparison purposes. Regardless this is certainly one of the two best graded, and a coin which even the most advanced collector would long be proud to own. Identifiable by a thin reeding mark below the second T of TRUST and another on Liberty's lower neck just above the 0 in the date. There is a thin die crack extending from the curve of the 5 through the truncation to the lower two points of the last star towards the rim. On the reverse we note heavy die file marks, including one that connects UN and another that connect the middle of NI of UNITED, and this is an early die state.
Ex: Purchased directly from the San Francisco Mint, November 1905 by J. M. Clapp, to John H. Clapp, Clapp Estate 1942 to Louis E. Eliasberg Louis E. Eliasberg Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/97), lot 2105 where it realized $23,100.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:4240
