1905 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS65 NGC. Farran Zerbe, promoter of the Louisiana Purchase gold dollars, filled a similar role with the 1904 and 1905 Lewis and Clark pieces. Collectors who had purchased the former, many miffed that their commemoratives had plunged in value, stayed away from the new pieces. In addition, the lower attendance for the Lewis and Clark Exposition resulted in lessened sales to the general public. As a result, the Lewis and Clark gold dollars of both dates are among the more challenging classic commemorative issues.
This second-year Gem offers vibrant, enticing luster, and the pale yellow-gold surfaces are carefully preserved. The pleasingly delineated portraits contribute to the commemorative's strong eye appeal. Challenging any finer, with only 43 such pieces certified by NGC (10/07).
From The Fleur Wales-Baillie Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
