1905<G$1> Lewis and Clark MS65 NGC. Congressional legislation authorizing these coins to be struck was approved on April 13, 1904. The issuing entity was a group with a cumbersome name: Lewis and Clark Centennial and American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair Company. The legislation called for as many as 250,000 examples to be struck, although demand was not quite what Congress and the Lewis and Clark agency anticipated, and the final total mintage for both the 1904 and 1905 dated issues was only about 20,000 coins. Gem examples of the Lewis and Clark gold dollar are infrequently encountered in the numismatic marketplace. This is a highly lustrous and attractive Gem with brilliant yellow-gold surfaces and a few tiny dark toning spots. It has exceptional eye appeal.
