1905 $20 MS63 PCGS. The 1905 double eagle mintage (58,919 business strikes) was vastly reduced from previous years, and today this issue is one of the most sought-after Type Three twenties. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in their 2006 treatise write of the 1905: "Most of the coins have been plucked from gold shipments that have returned to the United States in recent years. The average coin grades AU58 to MS61. Choice examples of the date are very rare, and none are known at the gem level."
Peach-gold surfaces on this Select specimen reveal nice luster and occasional hints of apricot. The design elements have benefited from an attentive strike, including relatively strong delineation in Liberty's hair and the eagle's wings; the bird's neck shows some minor weakness. A scattering of minute marks define the grade. Population: 39 in 63, 8 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
