1904-S S$1 MS67 PCGS. A satiny Superb Gem with medium
1904-S S$1 MS67 PCGS. A satiny Superb Gem with medium golden-brown toning evenly distributed across both surfaces. The underlying luster is exceptional with frosty surfaces.
Although a series such as Morgan dollars, studied so extensively by so many, is best understood by the most recent research, it is sometimes instructive to consider the commentary that has appeared in earlier studies. In 1984, Steve Ivy and Ron Howard published What Every Silver Dollar Buyer Should Know. They wrote: "No significant quantities of 1904-S dollars have ever been unleashed upon the market. Apparently, no groups in excess of single rolls were preserved. Despite the presence of most San Francisco Morgans in the Redfield Hoard, no 1904-S's were included." This date is considered a key date, although lower Mint State pieces can be found from time to time. It is Gem or finer pieces that are truly elusive. In The Official Red Book of Morgan Silver Dollars, Dave Bowers commented: "The 1904-S dollar is one of the key issues in the series, and in comparison to the demand for them, Mint State pieces are elusive."
At one time, this issue was actually considered a common date. Many bags appeared in the 1930s and 1940s, fulfilling collector demand at that time. Eventually, demand caught up with this old supply, and by the time of the Treasury release in the early 1960s, no more came on the market. Population: 2 in 67, 0 finer (2/07).
From The Jackson Hole Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
