1904-S S$1 MS64 PCGS. Quantities of 1904-S Dollars dribbled out of government holdings through the 1950s. The distributing institutions were as varied as the Treasury Department building in Washington, D.C. and banks in the Los Angeles area. These coins served to trick dealers and collectors at the time into thinking that the '04-S was a plentiful date in Mint State. However, after the dispersal of the Treasury Department holdings in the early 1960s and the Redfield estate in the 1970s (neither of which contained any Uncirculated '04-S Dollars), specialists began to look upon this date with more respect. Today, this, the penultimate Morgan Dollar from the San Francisco Mint, is rightly regarded as one of the premier condition rarities in this long-lived series. Whereas most extant '04-S Dollars possess bothersome striking incompleteness in the centers, this lovely near-Gem is boldly struck on the hair over Liberty's ear and the eagle's breast feathers. The surfaces are softly frosted, and the number of bagmarks is minimal. Accuracy does compel us to mention, however, a pair of moderate distractions on the eagle's breast. Nevertheless, this is an attractive representative of this conditionally rare S-mint Morgan. From the Hans Poetsch Collection.
