1904 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 PCGS. An Act of Con
1904<G$1> Lewis and Clark MS66 PCGS. An Act of Congress dated April 13, 1904 called for an exposition to honor Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's 1803-1806 exploration of the U.S. Northwest. Although the Philadelphia Mint produced 25,028 examples in 1904 and a further 35,041 coins in 1905, a number of examples from each year were subsequently melted as unsold. The net mintages of these two issues is 10,025 and 10,041 pieces, respectively.
An exceptionally well preserved survivor of the first-year 1904 production, the present Gem is among the finest Lewis and Clark Gold Dollars that this cataloger has handled. Fulsome mint luster shimmers across both sides, and modest hints of brightness are also evident in the fields as the coin dips into the light. Lovely rose-gold color overlays bold devices with a medium intensity. There are virtually no abrasions in evidence, and those that are present are small and not distracting. A coin that would do justice to the finest specialized collection of Commemorative gold.
