<B>1904 G$1 Lewis and Clark MS66 NGC.</B></I> The 1904 Lewis and Clark dollars are inextricably linked to their classic gold commemorative counterparts, the 1903 Louisiana Purchase pieces. The Purchase led to the expedition that made the two explorers famous, and the disappointing sales of the 1903 coins carried over to the later issue. In his <I>Commemorative Coins of the United States</B></I>, Q. David Bowers (1991) writes: "So widespread was the disaffection for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition gold dollars that sales of the next issue authorized by the government, the Lewis and Clark gold dollars, were severely impacted in a negative way."<BR> This Premium Gem is an uncommonly fine survivor of this early commemorative issue. The yellow-gold fields offer excellent luster with a touch of flashiness. The strike is sharp, and the surfaces are free of the distracting abrasions that so often appear on lesser examples. Immensely appealing.
