1904 Bemis Brothers Bag Co. Cloth Bird Calendar
Featured in this lot is this 1904 Bemis Brothers Bag Company cloth calendar. Mississippi-born industrialist Judson Moss Bemis (1833-1921) founded the Bemis Bag Company in 1858 in Saint Louis, MO. Instead of using the traditional, less effective, hand-sewing methods, his factory produced textile bags using new mechanical sewing machines. In the midst of the Civil War, the Union Army placed massive orders for grain storage bags made of burlap and military haversacks, which helped the business expand. The company made products ranging from self-venting cook-in-bag packaging and retort packaging for shelf-stable products, to vacuum packaging for meat products and puncture-resistant, sterile medical packaging and more. The calendar shows different colored cloth pieces of green, gray, tan, yellow, and red and shows two months of the year on each piece of cloth. The top of the front piece of cloth reads, "American Songsters" as the theme of the calendar is American Birds. Below each first month it reads, "Bemis Bro. Bag Co." and below that shows a picture of different American songbirds. The calendar shows good condition with wear and fading to the cloth pieces but no signs of obvious damage or tears are present. The calendar measures 22 3/4" L x 7 1/2" W.
