<B>1904 5C PR67 Cameo NGC.</B></I> 1904 nickels with a Cameo finish are few and far between as evidenced by the census/population data, showing NGC and PCGS have certified just nine Cameo examples. The reason for this, as pointed out by David Bowers in his <I>Guide Book of Shield and Liberty Head Nickels,</B></I> is that the portrait and devices were not frosted, following new procedures for making proof dies. He states: "The portrait is in low contrast, reflecting changes at the Mint, which had just recently moved into a new building. ... At this point, 'cameo' pieces were no longer available, a situation that would last for several years." The nine certified Cameos, including the Superb Gem in the present lot, likely resulted from the earliest strikes. Untoned surfaces yield strong contrast between deeply mirrored fields and exquisitely struck, design elements. Both sides are virtually unimprovable.
