<B>1904 50C PR67 <img src="/images/star.gif" width="10" height="10" alt="" border="0"> Cameo NGC.</B></I> While we have not kept records of "orange peel toning," it is usually seen on proofs, especially gold proofs, from the 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s. To our knowledge, the exact reason for this "dry creek bed" look in the fields is not known. We believe it is from the use of non-chromium plated dies, something the mint did not start until 1927. So, it should be visible on proofs through 1907. After that time the matte finish on proofs would override the orange peel effect. <BR> This dazzling, deeply mirrored piece has strong cameo contrast on each side. There is just the slightest bit of golden color visible around the margins. As indicated by the star designation, this piece has superior eye appeal for the grade.
