1904 $20 PR63 PCGS. Estimates on the number of extant proof 1904 Double Eagles (out of an original mintage of 98 pieces) range from 30-35 coins (per Akers, 1982) to 40-45 coins (per Breen, 1988). Either way, there can be no doubt that the proof 1904 is a rare coin at all levels of preservation. The first PR63 representative that we have offered since 2000, this coin is deeply colored in vivid orange-gold and olive-gold shades. Both sides are essentially uniform in brilliance with reflective features noted throughout. The strike is razor sharp in virtually all areas, and the fields do not reveal a excessive number of hairlines for the assigned grade. Some light haziness is noted here and there, and there are slidemarks on Liberty's cheek. A small planchet void (as struck) in the reverse field above the arrowheads should help trace the pedigree of this visually impressive and rare specimen. The last PR63 PCGS example we handled sold for $15,813 as lot 7896 in our May 2000 Central States Signature Sale. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
