1904 $20 MS66 PCGS. There are type coins and then there are archetypal type coins, those that represent the ultimate in the coiner's art and produced in sufficiently plentiful quantities to stand for the best and brightest of the various U.S. coin series. Such coins would include the Morgan dollars from 1879-S to 1882-S, the 1908 No Motto Saint-Gaudens twenty, the 1932 ten dollar Indian, and the 1904 Liberty Head double eagle, of course. With more than 6 million examples manufactured in 1904 at Philadelphia alone, this issue is the zenith of the Liberty Head double eagle. Pieces can be found in all grades up through MS66. The present coin is nonetheless at the top rank of surviving members, with deep sunset-orange patination untroubled by even the most minuscule distraction. Pieces in finer grade are few and far between.

Coin Engraver: James B.
