1904 $20 MS66 PCGS. (Gargantuan, enormous, prodigious, monumental), pick which adjectives you will to describe the mintage of 1904 double eagles--and many others as well spring to the tongue (and pen). Between the San Francisco and Philadelphia mints, they managed to produce nearly 11.5 million coins, an amount of gold that in today's dollars would be valued at nearly 7.4 billion dollars! Philadelphia edged out San Francisco by about a 6:5 ratio in terms of pieces produced. Despite those (massive) mintages, the population becomes quite rarefied in grades above Gem Mint State: As of (8/07), PCGS has certified only two coins finer than the present piece, one of 124 in MS66. This piece boasts fully struck surfaces on both sides, with lovely orange-gold coloration and lustrous radiance. Certified in an old-style PCGS green-label holder.

Coin Engraver: James B.
