1904<$20> MS66 NGC. The 1904 has the second highest mintage of any U.S. gold coin. Only the 1928 was struck in greater numbers. Millions of double eagles met their end in Treasury furnaces following Roosevelt's gold recall. Nonetheless, the 1904 is common today in grades through MS64. In Gem or finer grades, the 1904 is surprisingly scarce, since gold coins of this era were strictly regarded as bullion for decades after their production. Loose bag storage and indifferent handling decimated the quantity of high grade pieces. NGC and PCGS combined have certified just 3 pieces as MS67 with none finer. MS66 examples are also rare, and are under strong pressure from gold type collectors and hoarders. The present piece has a remarkably smooth obverse, and the reverse displays only trivial contact. The strike is precise, and potent luster fully illuminates the yellow-gold fields and devices.
