1904 1C PR65 Red PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. The otherwise golden-orange surfaces reveal isolated sprays of medium red shadings around the peripheries. While the latter color is more readily evident on the obverse, both sides are equally well produced with needle sharp striking detail throughout. Kept from an even higher grade by a few wispy carbon flecks, yet possessed of captivating eye appeal. The top of an errant 9 in barely visible in the denticles below the second digit in the date. Writing in 2000, Rick Snow states that this is the only known die variety of this 1,817-piece proof delivery. Early die state examples of this and many proof Indian Cents from the 1900-1909 era show die polishing lines (as produced) that cover both the obverse and the reverse. This is indicative of an early die state and does not limit the grade. The obverse of the present example shows these polishing lines. However, the reverse die that struck this coin was prepared differently. It exhibits what is commonly called an "orange peel field." The die was polished while it was soft and unannealed. During the hardening process, the die steel shrank slightly, thereby creating the buckled look of finely polished mirror fields. This is a highly desired feature among Indian Cent specialists, and the present example also displays a finish that, in Rick Snow's opinion, is deep mirror cameo. From the Joseph P.
