1903$1> PR68 Cameo NGC. The appearance of any Cameo proof coin from the earliest years of the 20th century is a remarkable thing. In fact, Dave Bowers described the following scenario under his description for 1902-dated proof Morgans in the Red Book of this series: "some employee, perhaps new on the job, decided this year to polish the portraits on the various proof dies, and to really polish them in 1903--doing away with cameo contrast." Consider, for example, that NGC has certified 230 proof examples of this date, but only five of those have received the Cameo designation, and none have been certified as Ultra Cameo. The situation is nearly identical at PCGS, with just three Cameo examples out of 254 certified proofs, and none described as Deep Cameo. While this is one of three examples certified as PR68 Cameo, none have been given a PR69 grade, thus, this example is equal to the finest certified representatives of the date. Other dates from this same period of time have a similar population structure.
This example is truly a remarkable 1903 proof dollar with mostly brilliant silver surfaces, accented by traces and splashes of rose-colored toning. Slight weakness of the design is evident over Liberty's ear, and on the eagle's breast, but all remaining design details are crisply defined. The surfaces on both sides are very nearly perfect without any hairlines or other noticeable imperfections. An exceptional Gem that will easily please the connoisseur. Census: 3 in 68, 0 finer (6/06).
