1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase/McKinley PR63 NGC. Only 10
1903<G$1> Louisiana Purchase/McKinley PR63 NGC. Only 100 proofs were issued of this elusive gold commemorative dollar, along with 100 proofs of the Louisiana-Jefferson. Those proof strikings were originally encased in a special imprinted card, covered by a wax-paper window and signed by J.M. Landis and R.R. Freed, superintendent and coiner, respectively, of the Philadelphia Mint. Although this piece now resides in an NGC slab, careful perusal instantly confirms its proof status: The fields are brilliantly and deeply mirrored (with no trace of the business strike's usual satiny luster), the dentilation is squared-off and uniform, and the hair details, bow tie, and other myriad details are distinctly different from a business strike. Tiny contact marks in the fields are noted, along with a die crack on the reverse that passes from the rim through the P in EXPOSITION and onward nearly to the R in DOLLAR.
